Masts are people who, through intense love for God, their minds have turned inward. They bask in the light of the soul and are typically unaware of their surroundings. They are often unable to care for their physical bodies or keep the rhythm of a steady conventional life. They may become completely eccentric in habits. Throughout his life, Meher Baba prioritized these lovers of God. He also served those suffering from ordinary mental illness, starting ashrams (establishments) to care for both; those who have lost mental stability due to the pressures of the world (conventional mental destabilization) as well as those who are absorbed in love for God and no longer participate in the normal routine of life as expected by the world.
Meher Baba also bathed and served lepers in various localities. At the time, this was considered dangerous as people did not know it was not contagious. Throughout his travels, he served the poor, the suffering and those divinely-mad, absorbed in God.
